Informative Video

This informative video was aired on Health Matters, a community program sponsored by Porter Medical Center. Helen Porter has recently expanded to allow for more residents and changed the way residents are treated. The feel of a hospital setting has been replaced with a home like feel. Gone are the obvious nursing stations, wards and trays of food. Residents are organized into neighborhoods with residents of similar abilities and heath needs.

Dining has been decentralized with table cloths and even a turkey served on Thanksgiving.  Food is available when the resident desires, as at home, and tailored to the dietary requirements of the individual.

Our memory care unit is structured to offer activity-based care in a warm, supportive and safe environment with a primary goal of helping individuals maintain dignity, purpose and functional ability. We work with families and offer support groups.

Our Namaste Care program, developed by dementia care expert, Joyce Simard, M.S.W., is designed to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of those in the advanced stages of dementia through loving touch, meaningful activities and the presence of others. Residents experience the care as calming and soothing and postive. This is a very specialized program, not found elsewhere in Vermont.
